Lagos State holds Sports Fiesta for upcoming National Intermediate Games
Team Lagos, which is to host the National Intermediate Games in October has commenced screening for a robust team of athletes to represent the state in the maiden edition through a Secondary School Sports Fiesta.
The open screening, held at Tolu Secondary School Complex at Ajegunle, comprised of both public and private school students to compete in chess, athletics and scrabble. The trial was directed at discovering outstanding students in different categories to represent the state at the championship.
Dr. Oluyomi Oluwasanmi, the Director of School Sports at Lagos Commissioner stated that the Lagos State Secondary School Sports Fiesta is to comb the nooks and crannies of the state, especially school systems to get more talents that can be used to beef up the already established pool of talents in preparation for the maiden edition of the National Intermediate Games being hosted by Lagos state October this year.
Adding that the Fiesta is one of several competition designed to that effect, she said
“More trials will still be conducted to discover talents who will join the already established pool. Then we will commence training from there. By the time we get to September, Lagos will have formidable teams across all sports that have been approved for the National Intermediate Games.”
The Commission’s Director of Sports Development, Nunayon Travih addressed the students and encouraged them to take advantage of the opportunity. He also explained the purpose of the inception of the trial as well as the importance it carries.
“This is a selection trial to pick top and talented athletes within the school bracket to engage with already discovered athletes from the sports associations at the Lagos State Sports Commission.”
“This way, we can have a mix of both environments to get the best for Lagos state at the National Intermediate Games. So see this as an opportunity to express yourself and put in your best.” He added.
