Lagos NURTW leader declared dead after attack by gunmen
The Organizing Secretary of the National Union of Transport Workers, Lagos State Council, Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Ijaya has been confirmed dead after being shot by yet-to be identified gunmen in Lagos. Reports indicate that the late Organizing Secretary, along with other occupants of the vehicle survived the gunshots, however was pronounced dead by medical experts at the St. Nichola Hospital in Lagos Island Local Government where he was rushed to following the attack
According to reports, he was attacked on Sunday, with his vehicle intercepted and gunshots fired by the gunmen at Ikorodu Road axis, on his return from his home in Fadeyi area of Lagos.
Pictures circulated online which showcase the deceased’svwhite car filled with bullet holes on the windscreen and other parts of the car.
The death of the late official brought grief to the Lagos NURTW Chairman, Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle, who described him as a loyal ally and trusted friend.
He expressed this in a Facebook post where he stated “The news of the sudden passing of Comrade Toba Ajiboye has left me deeply saddened and heartbroken. It is difficult to come to terms with the loss of such a loyal, dependable and committed ally.”
He also commended the late Secretary’s commitment to the Union, adding that his dedication would forever be remembered.
“Comrade Toba Ajiboye, the Organising Secretary of the NURTW Lagos State Council, was more than an ally; he was a trusted friend, a man of steadfast loyalty and unwavering commitment, and a true pillar of TeamSego and SegoNation. His friendship, unwavering support and selfless dedication to the union over the years will forever remain etched in my heart,” he commented.
The Chairman also extended his condolences to friends, colleagues and family members of the deceased.
“My heartfelt condolences go to his family, friends and the entire NURTW family. May Almighty God forgive his shortcomings, grant him eternal rest, and give us all the strength and fortitude to bear this painful and irreparable loss,”
Meanwhile, Lagos Police Command has commenced an intensive manhunt for yet-to-be-identified gunmen who shot the deceased. There are however, reports of confusion between the Police and ardent supporters of the victim, on Tuesday, around St. Nichola Hospital, after transporters prevented security operatives from accessing the medical facility to recover his body after his death was pronounced.
SP Abimbola Adebisi, Lagos state Police Command spokesperson assured that security personnel have been deployed to strategic locations to forestall any breakdown of law and order across the state.
“Investigation is ongoing to get the perpetrators, the Command has also deployed to strategic locations to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order” the statement affirmed.
