Lagos Government Launches Anti-Ebola Campaign: Operation Bio-Shield
The Lagos State government has launched a public awareness campaign following the outbreak of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The campaign tagged “Operation Lagos Bio-Shield” is a state – wide awareness program aimed to serve as a measure to strengthen preparedness and prevention of a possible import and spread of the disease.
The state Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, stated that there is no recorded case of Ebola; however, precautionary means should be applied to keep the state free from the virus. Therefore, Operation Lagos Bio-Shield is only a public awareness campaign aimed at strengthening preparedness. The commissioner stated “This campaign is not a response to a crisis, it is a proactive measure to strengthen public awareness, preparedness and prevention.”. The campaign reflects the dedication of the government to its citizens.
The Commissioner emphasized the need for the public’s understanding of the disease, as it is crucial to the prevention of it. He goes further to explain that it is contacted through contact with bodily fluids and contaminated materials of an infected person, rather than casual contact. This awareness is quite important to Lagos state, as it remains a bubbling city. “As Nigeria’s commercial capital and a major regional transport hub, Lagos retains extensive air, land and maritime connections with the rest of Africa and the world.” He stated.
Prof. Abayomi announced that in the following weeks, the ministry would intensify public awareness through education on Ebola prevention, symptoms, working channels and protective measures for both homes and public places. Residents were urged to rely only on verified information and commit to prevention efforts. He also advised that the State hotlines such as 112 and 767, or the State epidermiologist be contacted through the number +234802 316 9485, upon the return of anyone from the affected countries with symptoms such as fever, vomiting, weakness, diarrhea or unexplained bleeding.
The Commissioner declared “Through strong leadership, effective surveillance, rapid response and collective efforts of healthcare workers and residents, our State successfully contained Ebola and protected millions of lives. Today, we remain prepared, vigilant and committed to safeguarding the health of every Lagosian. Together, we will keep Lagos safe.” highlighting his confidence in the ability of Lagos to respond to any of such threat in the future.
